Name: Gillian Goldie
Business: Gillian Goldie Designs
Location: 1960 Westfield road
Going Strong: 2+ years!
I first met Gillian yesterday, when I showed up at her home office to interview and photograph her for my Pink Owl Project. We instantly hit it off - and talked and chatted for over two hours - before we even got down to 'business'!
Her talent shows in work, and she has such an amazing personality. Easy to talk to, passionate about what she does - and full of creativity!
Take a look at Gillian, and her business!
What inspired you to start your own business?
While I was in Australia I had worked at an amazing gallery, Object Gallery. The environment was so creative, and you were encouraged to explore different avenues to find a successful outcome. When I came back to Canada, the position I was employed at was completely different, it was all about producing work the cheapest and fastest way, to make the best buck. While I learnt a lot about the technical side of the job (the side that people rarely think of), and I met some great friends (some of whom I continue to work with!), after 2 and bit years, I felt creatively zapped. There were no design jobs available at the time, so I made my own.
What type of services do you offer?
If you can ask for it, I will probably do it - I have done logos, murals, documentary movies and lots in between! But typically I do branding (logos, letterheads, etc.), brochures, posters, book covers, annual reports, newsletters, t-shirts, and gift certificates for a diverse range of clients, including; The Canadian Cancer Society; Judith Mackin, PUNCH Productions; Je Suis Prest, and Fusion Saint John.
What do you enjoy most about the business you offer?
There are two things that stand out to me as the best parts of my business. The first is having the freedom to really explore an idea for a client, so I know that I can give them the best outcome. The only limitations I have are time and budget, no limitations on creativity! The second is the people I've met and have been lucky enough to work with. Yep, definitely the people I get to meet and work with is a major reason why this rocks, I can't stress this enough - I am truly lucky!
What sets you apart from your competitors?
Having an office in my home allows me to work on an idea or concept at anytime of the day, whenever the 'aha' moment strikes. I also really try to get to know my clients, this helps me understand their needs and wants better, therefore the outcome really fits with them and their business.
What makes you, and your business unique?
I grew up overseas (Fiji, then Australia), I take inspiration from those diverse environments and continue to research the design trends of my Australian counterparts and combine them with my own style and Canadian trends, to offer my clients a unique product. I received my Bachelor of Design in Sydney, Australia and my graduating work was featured in a leading design magazine; Monument as part of their Top 40 graduates feature.
